Opinion: Our possibly short national nightmare
  + stars: | 2024-01-21 | by ( Richard Galant | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +19 min
“My fellow Americans, our long national nightmare is over,” President Gerald Ford said. “Our campaign is the last best hope of stopping the Trump-Biden nightmare,” the former UN ambassador said. If not, it won’t be as protracted a “national nightmare” as the two-year-long Watergate scandal that put Gerald Ford in the Oval Office. Though, depending on your point of view, the real nightmare could begin after the swearing-in. Yet, John Avlon wrote, Trump and some members of the House GOP, want to tank an emerging compromise in the Senate that would couple border security measures with aid to Ukraine.

A Writer Scrutinizes Privilege, Starting With His Own
  + stars: | 2023-08-22 | by ( Jonathan Dee | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
QUIET STREET: On American Privilege, by Nick McDonellIn the preface to his 11th book, the novelist and journalist Nick McDonell makes a very contemporary gesture of transparency by telling us how much he was paid to write it. Made deeply uneasy by the entitlement of America’s ruling class — an entitlement he himself took for granted as a child — he doesn’t have any extraordinary insight into why things are the way they are, or how they might be made otherwise. He relates these stories with a wince, though little in them seems all that groundbreakingly depraved. He and his Buckley schoolmates referred to the cafeteria workers by an unkind nickname. He once went to a wedding reception where there were four bars.

Reducing inequality by 2030 was one of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals adopted by most governments in 2015. But five years later, global inequality — measured as the difference in average incomes between countries — saw the largest annual rise in three decades, driven by the Covid-19 pandemic, according to the World Bank. The goal to reduce inequality “remains largely ignored,” Monday’s letter said. We ask you to seize this opportunity to back stronger goals.”A spokesperson for the World Bank welcomed the ideas proposed in the letter. At a meeting at the UN headquarters in New York Tuesday, due to be attended by representatives from governments, a group that includes Oxfam and UNAIDS will launch a “call to action” on global inequality.

What you’ve got to do to get more money from wealth is just let your money go out there and make money on its own. darrick hamiltonYeah, the extent to which our tax code incentivizes wealth and capital growth, it centers on existing wealth and capital growth. $50,000 to the most wealth-poor person seems like a big number, but we need to put that number in context. In other words, wealth begets more wealth, and wealth builds upon itself. ezra kleinI think that’s a great place to end, so I’ll ask our final question.

Mamadi Doumbouya for The New York Times Talk Bono Is Still Trying to Figure Out U2 and HimselfThere are different Bonos to different people, including the man himself. You say, “But you’re U2 — you don’t need that.” What’s interesting is that we want that. But I also wrote the book to try to figure out what was going on with U2. They sound like U2 songs. Do they sound like U2 songs?
Right now, billions of dollars of assets are held in secretive trusts across the country. In those states, billions of dollars remain untouched and untaxed. "Wealthy people from around the world are bringing their assets and wealth to the United States to park it and avoid responsibility." "We can safely say we're talking hundreds of billions of dollars a year, trillions probably, that are not being subject to tax," Collins said. "It's costing the rest of us taxpayers billions and hundreds of billions of dollars in lost revenue," Collins said.
